Fireworks Safety

Fireworks can be a fun way to celebrate the 4th of July, but they can also be dangerous

Here are a few safety tips and regulations to have a safe holiday.

• Light fireworks on the ground. Do not hold them when lighting them.

• Keep children and pets away from the fireworks.

• Children should not light fireworks. Only adults should light fireworks.

• Stay sober while lighting fireworks. Do not mix fireworks and alcohol.

• Wet down the area where you will set off your fireworks. Have a way to extinguish accidental fires, like a fire extinguisher or water hose.

• Ensure fireworks are pointed away from people, buildings, powerlines, and trees.

• Have a phone nearby to call 911 in case of an emergency. 

• Review local and state laws on fireworks. 

• Check the Virginia Department of Fire Programs website for a list of all legal fireworks.
